What a BAS and an IAS actually are
A Business Activity Statement (BAS) is the regular report GST-registered businesses lodge with the ATO to report GST, PAYG withholding and other obligations. An Instalment Activity Statement (IAS) is a similar report used by businesses that aren’t registered for GST, or that need to report PAYG instalments or withholding separately from a BAS.
SMA Business Advisory is a BAS accountant Sydney business owners rely on to get both right, every reporting period, without the last-minute scramble. We confirm which of the two applies to your business, then manage the preparation and lodgement cycle for you.

If you’re not yet registered for GST or PAYG and aren’t sure whether you need to be, that’s a good starting conversation for a consultation, before anything is lodged incorrectly.
- GST and PAYG figures reviewed by a CPA, not lodged straight from your software
- Registered agent access to later lodgement deadlines than lodging yourself
- Your lodgement calendar managed directly with the ATO on your behalf
- One adviser across your BAS, IAS and annual tax return, for consistent figures
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions we hear most often. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
What exactly is a BAS?
A BAS, or Business Activity Statement, is a form GST-registered businesses lodge with the ATO to report GST collected and paid, PAYG withholding, and PAYG instalments, on a monthly, quarterly or annual cycle.
What exactly is an IAS?
An IAS, or Instalment Activity Statement, is used by businesses that aren’t registered for GST, or that need to report PAYG instalments or withholding separately from their BAS.
How do I know if I should be lodging a BAS or an IAS?
It depends on your GST registration status and reporting obligations. We’ll confirm which applies to your business as part of getting you set up.
Do I need a BAS agent, or can I lodge it myself?
You can lodge your own BAS, but using a registered BAS or tax agent, like SMA Business Advisory, generally gives you access to later lodgement deadlines and an extra check before your figures reach the ATO.
What happens if I lodge my BAS late?
Late BAS lodgement can result in ATO penalties and interest. If you’re behind, we can help you get lodgements current and talk to the ATO on your behalf where needed.
Can you prepare my BAS directly from Xero or MYOB?
Yes. We’re a Xero-based practice, so your BAS is prepared through Xero. If you’re on MYOB, we’ll work from your figures there and review your GST coding as part of preparing your BAS.
Do I still need to lodge a BAS if I have no activity for the period?
Generally yes, a nil BAS still needs to be lodged by the due date if you’re registered for GST. We can confirm your specific obligations and manage the lodgement for you.
