SMA Business Advisory Pty Ltd (ABN 65 698 496 829) is committed to protecting your privacy in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles set out in Schedule 1 to that Act.
Handling your financial and personal information carefully is part of the trust that underpins any accountant-client relationship, and we take that seriously in everything below.
1. What we collect
Depending on how you interact with us, we may collect your name and contact details such as email, phone and address; business details including your ABN, entity structure and ASIC details; and financial and taxation information you provide so we can prepare returns, statements or advice, which may include your Tax File Number, income, expenses, assets and liabilities. If you contact us through our website, we also collect whatever information you enter into our enquiry form.
2. How we collect it
We generally collect information directly from you, through our website contact form, phone, email or in person, or from anyone you’ve authorised to act on your behalf. We may also receive information from the ATO, ASIC or other government agencies where this is necessary to provide our services, or from third parties you’ve authorised, for example a previous accountant during a transfer of records.
3. Why we collect and use it
We use personal information to provide the accounting, taxation and advisory services you’ve engaged us for, and to meet our legal and regulatory obligations, including under the Tax Agent Services Act 2009 (Cth) and taxation law more broadly. We also use it to communicate with you about your engagement, and, only with your consent, to send you occasional updates or insights relevant to your business.
4. Disclosure to third parties
We may disclose your information to the ATO, ASIC and other government bodies where this is required to provide our services or comply with the law. We may also disclose it to our software and cloud service providers, such as Xero and other practice management or cloud accounting platforms, strictly for the purpose of delivering our services to you, and to our professional indemnity insurer, auditors or professional advisers where necessary. We won’t disclose your information to any other party unless you specifically authorise it. We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
5. Overseas disclosure
Some of the cloud-based software we use, such as Xero, may store or process data on servers located outside Australia. Where this happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information is handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.
6. Data security
We take reasonable technical and organisational steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference and loss, and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. This includes access controls and secure storage of both physical and electronic records.
7. Access and correction
You can ask to access, or correct, the personal information we hold about you by contacting us using the details below. We’ll respond within a reasonable period, and in most cases at no cost, except in the limited circumstances the Australian Privacy Principles allow.
8. Retention
We keep client records for as long as the law requires, generally a minimum of five years from the date of lodgment for taxation records, and longer where this is required for companies, trusts or other specific obligations. Once records are no longer required, we securely destroy or de-identify them.
9. Cookies and website analytics
Our website may use cookies and analytics tools, such as Google Analytics, to understand how visitors use the Site and to improve its performance. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, though this may affect some website functionality.
10. Direct marketing
If you’ve given us your email address, for example through our newsletter signup, we may send you occasional business and accounting insights. You can opt out at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us directly.
11. Complaints about privacy
If you believe we’ve breached the Australian Privacy Principles, please contact us first at manraj@smabusinessadvisory.com.au so we can look into it. If you’re not satisfied with our response, you can lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

We may update this policy from time to time. The current version will always be available on this page.
