What FBT actually covers
Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) is a tax employers pay on certain non-cash benefits provided to employees or their associates, such as a work vehicle for private use, entertainment, or a low-interest loan. It’s separate from income tax and runs on its own annual cycle, from 1 April to 31 March, rather than the usual financial year.
SMA Business Advisory provides FBT accounting for Sydney businesses that provide these kinds of benefits, working out what’s taxable, what’s exempt, and what needs to be lodged. Manraj, a CPA-qualified, registered tax agent with 15+ years’ experience, oversees your FBT return as part of your broader tax compliance, so it’s never treated as an afterthought.
Identifying, calculating
and lodging your FBT
We start by working out what your business actually provides employees, then calculate, document and lodge your FBT return accordingly.
- Benefit identification
- FBT registration & assessment
- Return preparation & lodgement
- Exemptions & employee contributions
Benefits assessed properly, not guessed at
FBT rules are detailed, and it’s easy to either miss a taxable benefit or over-report one that’s actually exempt. Manraj reviews your specific benefits against current ATO guidance rather than applying a generic checklist, and your FBT return is prepared alongside your other compliance work so your overall tax position stays consistent.
If your business only pays cash salary and superannuation with no additional benefits, FBT is unlikely to apply, and we’ll tell you that plainly at a consultation rather than manufacture work that isn’t needed.
- Every benefit assessed against current ATO guidance, not a generic checklist
- FBT prepared alongside your other tax compliance for a consistent overall position
- Exemptions and employee contributions checked before your liability is finalised
- Support catching up FBT lodgements you may have missed in previous years
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions we hear most often. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
What is FBT, in plain English?
FBT is a tax paid by employers on certain benefits, other than salary and wages, given to employees or their associates. Common examples include a work car available for private use, entertainment, and low-interest loans.
Is FBT the same as income tax?
No. FBT is a separate tax paid by the employer, calculated on its own annual cycle from 1 April to 31 March, distinct from your business’s income tax return.
Do I need to register for FBT if I provide my staff with a work vehicle?
It depends on how the vehicle is used. If it’s available for an employee’s private use, FBT may apply. We can assess your specific situation and confirm whether registration is needed.
Can employee contributions reduce my FBT liability?
Yes, in some cases an employee contributing toward the cost of a benefit can reduce the taxable value for FBT purposes. We’ll check whether this applies to your circumstances.
What records do I need to keep for FBT purposes?
Generally, records relating to each benefit provided, such as vehicle logs and entertainment expenses, plus any required employee declarations, kept for 5 years. We’ll confirm exactly what applies to your situation at a consultation.
What happens if I've never lodged an FBT return but should have been?
Until you lodge, there’s no time limit on your exposure. We can review your position and manage a voluntary disclosure or catch-up lodgement, which generally attracts lower penalties than waiting to be contacted by the ATO.
